Broadcasting to Patients in Reading's Hospitals Since 1957

Sainsburys

Patients who are unfortunate enough to be in hospital over the weekend are often in need of a little bit extra to cheer them up. Now Hospital Radio Reading has joined forces with a local supermarket to do just that. Thanks to the sponsorship of Reading’s Friar St branch of Sainsburys, we will be awarding a prize every week to one lucky listener.

All you have to do is have your favourite record request played in one of our weekend “Record Requests” shows – either on Saturday (12 noon – 2pm or 8.30pm – 10pm) or on Sunday afternoon (2 – 5pm). HRR members visit most wards in the RBH at the weekend  in preparation for these shows and if you miss our request collectors when they visit your ward you can still call in on *800 to hear your request (a free call from your bedside phone). The names of all patients featuring in all three shows are entered into the draw at 4.30 on Sunday afternoon, during the Sunday Best show and the winner will receive a Sunday Surprise, delivered soon afterwards to their ward.

Sunday Surprise was the idea of Sainsburys Public Relations Ambassador for Reading, Charlotte Bernard, who says “At Sainsbury's Friar Street Reading we like to get out in the local community and help and support where we can. We thought it would be nice to do something with Hospital Radio Reading. After all there's nothing worse than being in hospital and the thought of a nice surprise from us may help to cheer someone up a little” .

Charlotte came along to the studio with a colleague in September 2012 to present the prize in person to the first lucky winner – but not until she had been interviewed on-air by presenters Clive and Nick. And how did she feel after making her radio debut? “It was a little daunting the first time I went on the radio” she recalls “but Clive and Nick made me feel so relaxed I'm really looking forward to doing it again. I did the first draw and got to meet Angie on the ward and present her prize to her. She is a fantastic lady and I wish her all the best for the future”.

So if you are stuck in that hospital bed over the weekend make sure you are in with the chance of a Sunday Surprise by giving us your request on Saturday or Sunday. You may even get to meet Charlotte. And what will your prize be ? Well, it could be sweets or chocolates, a cake or toiletries…. or maybe something else. But that would telling and we don’t want to spoil the surprise …..
